Most newspapers today contain horoscopes. These are predictions about what might happen to people based on their birthdates (corresponded to an astrological sign) and in some cases, deeper analysis of what was or is happening with various planetary alignments, etc.
It is, to be sure, foolishness. And yet our newspapers run the columns, and millions of people read them, and believe them, and give consideration to what their sign is and means. They consider how to make true what the columns predict, and give consideration to what they should do and not do. In the extreme, people consider how their own sign is compatible with other signs, in terms of friendships and marriage. Science has debunked the whole affair, but there you have it.
In the bible, in today's readings, Saul was struck down by God for breaking faith (1 Chronicles 10:13-14). It is a serious thing to break faith with God. And one of the ways Saul broke faith was to consult a medium (1 Samuel 28:3-25).
This was not something Saul could not have known. He and all the people of Israel knew not to consult mediums. Deuteronomy 18: 10-13 is the best text, but there are others. The people God was driving out from the promised land practised these things, and God through Moses told his people not to be like them.
Horoscopes rate up there to me with palm readers, tarot cards and seances. The majority of it is likely a hoax, and what is not a hoax is a dishonouring of God's provision for guidance. We are not left to consult mediums, which fundamentally evidences a lack of faith and trust in God.
God guides his people in severals way, including his word, prayer, the Holy Spirit, counsel of others, giftings, etc. But the first step I think is to simply seek God. God guides his people to this day, but not through mediums. Seeking the Lord is the first step to seeking his guidance. For more on seeking the Lord, click here.
